About Beaches
A beach is a relatively large and flat area of land consisting of sand, gravel, small rocks or pebbles and lying adjacent to a body of water such as a lake, river or ocean. Beaches are typically made up of sedimentary material that is deposited by the water over time due to the action of tides and waves. Ocean or seaside beaches are not hospitable to plant life due to their close proximity to salt water and their constantly changing surface, however some creatures can find a suitable habitat on beaches such as mollusks that attach themselves to rocks or crabs that burrowing into the sand during high tide and emerge at low tide to feed. For humans a beach is most often a place to enjoy the sun while sitting or lying on a beach mat followed by quick trips down to the water to cool off from the heat or to participate in water sports.
