About Cards
Cards are made from a rigid material such as thick paper or plastic that is cut to shape and then often preprinted with text or graphics. Paper cards that are not designed to be written on may be laminated with a thin clear film to protect the card and extend its life, examples of such cards include playing cards and trading cards. Cards that are designed for electronic transactions are usually made from plastic and include magnetic strips or embedded computer chips to provide them with their functionality such as those used to store value or to provide credit. Greeting cards for special occasions such as birthdays and major holidays are designed to be written on although these are gradually becoming less popular as they are replaced by electronic e-cards that can be transmitted digitally.
