About Islands

An island is an area of land that is surrounded by water (definition does not include the continental land masses such as Australia). Islands are created when the height of the land falls dues to tectonic activity or the sea level rises and submerges an area of land leaving the only the highest point visible, they are also formed when new land is created by volcanic processes, as is the case with the island chain of Hawaii in the Pacific ocean. Islands made also be man made through a process of dumping material such as rocks and gravel into a body of water to reclaim an area of land. The largest island in the world is Greenland which has an area of 2,130,800 sq km (822,706 sq mi) and the smallest island country in the world is Nauru located in the South Pacific which has an area of 21 sq km (8.1 sq mi).
